Don't lose sight of eye disease

Two million people in the UK are affected by uncorrectable sight loss. As the population gets older, more people than ever before are facing the prospect of losing their sight. Within the next 30 years about 40 per cent of the UK population will be aged 60 and over, which means 2.5 million people will be living with a visual impairment.

Not all sight loss can be treated. But in many instances, sight loss is preventable... The impact of diabetic eye disease and glaucoma, two of the biggest sight stealers, can be minimised if diagnosed early. How? Regular eye examinations help identify disease and early treatment may prevent blindness. One of the biggest barriers to diagnosis and treatment is lack of knowledge of the risks.

Get your eyes checked on a regular basis

The Lions Eye Health Programme (LEHP) is working to save sight. LEHP is a community based public awareness programme that provides the tools for Lions clubs, other community organisations and individuals to promote eye health.

By educating people about the causes of sight loss and encouraging them to undergo a comprehensive eye examination, millions of people could avoid the disability, loss of independence and diminished quality of life that can accompany sight loss. By working together we can strive to build healthy communities and to improve the quality of life for current and future generations.
