How you can Help

Communities are perhaps the strongest tool we have to help people become aware of the dangers to their vision and to take control of their eye health. Almost everyone knows someone with a vision problem. It could be a family member, neighbour, work colleague or friend down the street.

By working together families, neighbours and friends can create an environment in which eye health is considered important, community members are supported and the overall health of the community is improved.

Individuals

You don’t need to have a health care background or be an expert in eye health to participate. You can make an impact on the health of your community in many ways . You might place eye health leaflets in local shops or libraries. You might organise a sponsored walk or join a local low vision services committee that will help you make connections between eye health organisations and people in that use the services or who are in need in your community. These are just a few of the ways one person can have a big impact on eye health in a community. As you gain experience and tap into the community eye health network, you gain knowledge, allies and support for future activities.

Organisations

Community eye health projects provide an excellent opportunity for clubs, neighbours, businesses, places of worship and others to make a positive impact in their communities. The structure and resources of an established organisation easily lend themselves to conducting any LEHP activity.

Eye Health Experts and other Health Professionals

As a health professional, you can be a valuable asset to the eye health of your community. You can join a low vision services committee and find out about ways that you can impact personally. You might encourage involvement by other organizations, provide access to information and materials or serve as a technical expert/clinical consultant to provide credibility for others engaged in eye health activities.

Everyone can make a whether its...

  • Distributing eye health information to raise awareness of eye health.
There are LEHP brochures, videos and posters that help raise awareness about glaucoma and diabetic eye disease

  • Conducting eye health presentations such as showing the videos provided by LEHP. Lions clubs will partner with eye care professionals for these activities.
